"I will not settle for second best" said the person who recently part ways with her/his partner. People seem to follow their heart instead of leading it. The heart can be deceived, following it may look good in the short term but it's often devastating in the long run.

Love, like happiness, is a feeling and feelings come and goes but you'll never love someone you don't respect. Focus on finding things to respect about your partner and love will take care of itself.
