Recession Is Over?

Before you send me hate mail saying otherwise, note that I said it was over not that it was like it used to be. Based on this article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/20/AR2010092006355.html) found at the Washington post website, the recession ended in June of 2009.

The committee, that determined the recession was over, also said:
"In determining that a trough occurred in June 2009, the committee did not conclude that economic conditions since that month have been favorable or that the economy has returned to operating at normal capacity, any future downturn of the economy would be a new recession and not a continuation of the recession that began in December 2007."

To me, this is neither a good or a bad news. I don’t feel like it’s over at all and I won’t feel like it is until companies stops giving the excuse that it’s because of the recession that they had to lay off some people recently.

If the economy is getting better, from what I’ve seen of companies I worked for, they still didn’t give any raises nor bonuses to people who deserve it and they still give the excuse that it’s due to the recession.
I have a feeling that we’ll be a while without seeing any of those, not because of companies getting back up after the recession, why would they pay someone more if he’s willing to work for less?

Your kitchen is on Fire

While browsing the net, the other day, I came across an advertisement that I found quite offensive. It was basically saying “Are you tired of living your life? Come play *****! Instead”.
That, to me, means “Ignore the problems you have, it will go away on it’s own”.

If there’s a fire in your kitchen, will it go away just by you looking the other way? If you don’t take care of it, it will take everything you own. Eventually, other people will have to come and put it out for you because you can’t do it yourself anymore.

Take responsibility of your fires.

Life’s Secret Purpose

I think life is about choosing how you’ll be remembered. Let’s face it, we’re all going to die. What makes it interesting is that we don’t know when it’s going to happen.

If your goal is to be remembered as someone who was nice. Make great effort to be nice with everyone you meet, it might be your last chance to be remembered as a nice person with that person.

What ever your goal is, it’s important to start now. The clock is ticking.

Depreciation

Many successful business owners agrees that we should never finance, or invest in, things that depreciate in value (cars,video-games, T.V. etc). Even at 0% interest, a new car is not worth the amount of money advertised.

By the time you arrive home, the car you just finance for 10 000$ is worth 3 000$. You’re paying 7 000$ more than you should.

Then why don’t they just sell a new car for 3 000$? Why would they? A new car will never be sold for less than it’s worth and always be sold for the highest possible price.

The tactics use to sell cars are amazing. They make you pay X more than it’s actually worth and they make it sound like it’s a good deal. How? By having “Rebates”, “Special Events”, “Discounts”.

You know the sad part bout this? I fully realize this only after I bought my first new car!

The definition of depreciation, to me, is a mix between the amount someone is willing to pay for “it” used and how soon the next generation of “it” is coming.
